Theatre Ontario Awards Sandra Tulloch Award To Janis Barlow

Theatre Ontario is thrilled to announce the 2009 Sandra Tulloch Award for Innovation in the Arts shall be presented to Janis Barlow.

She is the leader and guiding light of the 2008 Arts Vote campaign in Niagara and she created a strategic survey for all candidates in four Niagara ridings that helped to increase the profile of the arts in the Niagara community and in the media.Janis Barlow

Janis excelled in senior management positions with Theatre Plus Toronto, Factory Theatre and Toronto Artscape. For the Ontario government, she managed the award-winning, $30 million rehabilitation of the Elgin and Winter Garden theatres in Toronto from 1981-1990, and was highly praised in three independent management audits. As a consultant, Janis Barlow & Associates has provided arts consulting services to over 100 clients in North America.

She recently received the 2008 Outstanding Individual Contribution Award from the League of Historic American Theatres.

Jane Gardner, General Manager of Carousel Players, and one of Janis' nominators, spoke highly of her. "She has inspired and helped many cultural organizations by giving them the tools to inspire creativity and critical thinking, and to help us make sense of our changing world. Her facilitation skills, knowledge of cultural facility issues, mentorship, information sharing and leadership in our community are deserving of the Sandra Tulloch Award for Innovation in the Arts Award."

The award will be presented to Janis on June 15th as part of the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts' 30th Anniversary Dora Nominees Celebration, held in partnership with Business For The Arts and Arts Scene, at The Spoke Club in Toronto.
