Where To Begin

Initiating a health and safety program at your theatre can seem like a daunting task. However, there are some basic steps you can take to get your Board of Directors, staff and volunteers to support and understand the importance of a safe working environment.

Suggested Health and Safety Commitment Policy (PDF file)
This document is a starting-place for your Board of Directors. The Board should adopt a health and safety policy, and this policy will need to be re-approved annually.

Suggested Theatre Manager's Pre-Season Checklist (PDF file)
This document assists a Theatre Manager in ensuring they are prepared for the beginning of the season. Topics include policies/procedures being update, systems inspected, traning conducted and forms updated.

This document includes a diagram to help you in post a health and safety display board for your theatre.

By conducting business in your theatre with due diligence, you help to protect your volunteers, staff, your board and yourself from serious penalties such as fines, jail, law suits, cease work orders and/or loss of business. This document outlines aspects of due dilligence.

This guide serves as an introduction to the Ontario Building Code and its implications for theatre groups.  This will apply to any group who owns or rents a theatre space and especially those considering the design, construction, demolition or renovation of any building or part of a building for theatre purposes.

Emergency Contact List and Emergency Contact List Internal (Word file)
The Emergency Contact List can be posted with the phone numbers of all your local emergency services. The Emergency Contact List Internal is used by stage management or front of house supervisors to contact particular management after safely dealing with particular emergencies.

Emergency Contact Information (Personal Health Information) (Word file)
This voluntary form is great for theatre workers to fill out. In case of an emergency, this information is given to a medical professional or hospital to assist with the injured's medical needs.
