Training
Following are a number of training resources and templates, including information on WHMIS
training.
Canada's Laws - Firearms and Bladed Weapons (PDF file) This document
highlights the Canadian laws that theatres should know about relating to:
the storage and transporting of firearms, buying ammunition, the use of
replicas (including air guns, blank-firing devices) and antique firearms,
and the definition by government of "prohibited weapons" and "prohibited
devices."
Suggested Vehicle Policy (PDF file) This document provides suggested
wording you may find helpful when establishing a company vehicle
policy. These suggestions incorporate vehicles owned by the theatre,
and personal vehicles authorized for company use.
Vehicle Pre-Start Inspection Record (PDF file) This chart can be
used when inspecting a vehicle for theatre use each day.
Training: Technical Tools (PDF file) This resource suggests wording
you may find helpful when establishing a system for training your workers,
contract workers, and volunteers on tool-use. There is also a
suggested template that can be used as a record of training, with two
categories of ‘tool types’ and some typical examples of each.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (PDF file) PPE is a term that
refers to clothing and equipment (for example, safety boots, hard hats,
goggles, etc.) that protects people while working. This chart helps
you understand which PPE are suitable to technical/design jobs in
theatre.
Using Pyrotechnics On Stage (PDF file) This
information sheet outlines pyrotechnic legislation in Canada, and where
training/licenses can be obtained. There is also information about
open flame on stage.
Basic Sound
System Assembly Guide (Word file) A simple guide for teachers
outlining how to assemble a sound system in their school or classroom.
Safety On Stage (Word
file) A guide for high school teachers about hanging lighting fixtures
and replacing bulbs.
School Stage Equipment
List (Word file) A simple inventory of high school stage
equipment.
The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System is usually
referred to as WHMIS (pronounced whim-iss). This Canada-wide system,
developed in consultation with management and labour and implemented
through coordinated Federal, Provincial and Territorial legislation,
applies to every Canadian workplace.
WHMIS: What Employers Need To Know (PDF file) This information sheet
explains the legal requirements of WHMIS, explores the duties of
Employers, Superviors and Workers under
WHMIS Workplace Training Participants Manual (PDF file) This 15-page
training guide is a suppliment to WHMIS training provided to theatre
workers. A copy of this document should be placed in the worker's
employment file.

those who have learned about WHMIS through the WHMIS Workplace Training
Participants Manual.
