Theatre Ontario’s Youth Advisory Committee connects young people pursuing a career in theatre across the province. In 2017, we have one goal: empower youth as active decision makers in their own careers.

Emergence: a theatre training day for youth, by youth.

Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre, Toronto

(This event has elevator access to all areas)

We are taking over this historical Ontario Heritage venue to bring together the next generation of theatre-makers and ask: what is working in this industry, and what needs to change?

Our aim is to bring together artists from different backgrounds and disciplines to collaborate on their craft and share knowledge from their varied experiences. The day will include:

  • Speed Ideating 
  • Career-planning
  • Practical labs
  • Guided discussions/Open Space
  • Powwow workshop

This day is open to writers, performers, directors, producers, designers, technicians and all creators working in live performance. The event is geared toward artists 16–30, but we won’t turn anyone away. Please keep in mind that topics are tailored for artists in the emerging stage of their careers.

We have a variety of ticket pricing the reduce financial costs as much as possible. If you cannot afford the ticket price, please reach out to youth@theatreontario.org and to join us as a volunteer or ambassador in exchange for free entry.

Schedule for the Day

10:00–10:30am: Registration & marketplace

10:30–11:00am: Speed Ideating

An ice breakers game where you’ll get to talk to every other participant in the day, structured with a new prompt for each new person you meet. Inspired by Neighbourhood Arts Network.

11:10am–12:00pm: Career planning roundtable discussions

Experience a decolonized panel where mentors and participants chat back and forth to share their knowledge and experiences.

  • Explore post-secondary training options with Ali Joy Richardson from Paprika Festival. Hear reflections of students and alumni from 10 different training options.
  • Managing your career as an artist

Take a break and chat with industry representatives to learn about opportunities in the city.
