John P. Kelly

John_P_KellyIt is now over twelve years since John arrived in Canada. In that time, he has officiated at festivals, workshops and play polishing, and has twice adjudicated at the Theatre Ontario Finals. He is a founder member of the Irish Association of Drama Adjudicators (ADA) and was for years a member of the British equivalent (GODA).

On arriving in Ottawa, he created his own professional theatre company and has now directed over thirty shows with it. He has also directed in Ottawa for the Great Canadian Theatre Company among others. He has three times received the Best Professional Director award from the Capital Critics Circle.

Of all his activities, tutoring workshop is his favourite and he regrets that so little seems to be available these years.

John trained in directing with the world famous Abbey Theatre in Dublin and his work has been seen in theatres all over his native Ireland.

In 2011, John and his wife Colette became proud Canadian citizens. Were it not for the Canadian winters, he would acknowledge no greater country in which to spend his remaining time on this planet. He shares with you his ‘signature’ from the bottom of each email he sends: 'Being Irish, he had an abiding sense of tragedy which sustained him through temporary periods of joy.' – WB Yeats.
