Theatre Ontario in partnership with IntimacyDirectorsInternational presents
Intimacy for the Stage for Performing Artists
Saturday April 13, 2019
11:00am to 3:00pm
Theatre Ontario Boardroom
Suite 350, 401 Richmond Street West, Toronto
Learn the techniques and the language to stage human sexuality in a way that is professional, dynamic and focused on storytelling.
As an actor you've probably been confronted with an intimate scene and you know how difficult they can be to stage comfortably. This 4 hour workshop is designed to give you the tools you need to handle these moments respectfully, safely, and with confidence. Learn the language and standards for intimacy that should be followed from rehearsal into performances, just like fight choreography.
The focus is on subtle and specific details in choreography for the purpose of telling the story of the scene. Contact improvisation is used as well as breath and eye contact to keep partners connected physically and emotionally.
Siobhan Richardson's Workshops on Intimacy for the Stage have been enthusiastically received as a practice which empowers actors to respect their own boundaries, while improving the quality and clarity of scenes of intimacy. Intimacy For The Stage workshops and the assistance of an Intimacy Director/Choreographer creates better storytelling, and is an important step forwards in supporting actors’ safety and rights.
Meet the Instructor…
Siobhan Richardson is an Intimacy Director, co-founder of Intimacy Directors International (www.Intimacy
DirectorsInternational.com) and of Canadian Intimacy for Stage and Screen (www.CISS.online), and one of two people in Canada recognized as an Intimacy Director by Tonia Sina, founder of the Intimacy For The Stage method. Siobhan is quickly building an impressive resume
in this field, including several directing and teaching credits across Canada, Europe, and the USA. Directing credits include Serenity Wild (Tender Container), White Biting Dog (Soulpepper), Odd One Out (Human Wick Effect), Dancock’s Dance (The Hogtown Collective), How I Learned To Drive (Trinity College Dramatic Society, University of Toronto), Aunt Dan and Lemon (Shadowtime Productions), The Container (Theatre Fix), The Trial of Judith K (Thought For Food Productions), and assistant to Intimacy Choreographer Tonia Sina on The Bakkhai (Stratford Festival, directed by Jillian Keiley). Recent teaching credits include workshops in Norway, Germany, the United States, and across Canada, with visits to Sweden, Denmark and Finland currently under negotiation. Siobhan is thrilled to be part of the movement that’s creating safer more respectful workspaces, and bringing Intimacy Directors into the rehearsal hall to support actors and directors in these sensitive moments which are so vital to plot and character development. Siobhan is also an actor/fighter/singer/dancer, and a fight instructor/director. In all her work, Siobhan is dedicated to the growth and development of the art form and for the artists in order to support a vibrant and healthy artistic community.
