Notice Of Meeting

The Theatre Ontario 2012 Annual General Meeting will be held Saturday, May 26 at 1:00pm at the Robert Gill Theatre (University of Toronto), 214 College Street, Toronto, Ontario (the northwest corner of College and St. George Streets.) The main entrance for the theatre is via St. George Street. An underground parking lot can be found on the east side of Huron Street, north of College Street.)

The meeting is open to all members in good standing. Please RSVP for meeting to Cornelia Persich, Education Coordinator, at or 416.408.4556 x.10 so we can plan for appropriate numbers.

If you are a Theatre Ontario member and are unable to attend the Annual General Meeting, you can be represented by proxy. Download a proxy form (PDF).

Members wishing to follow the meeting online can follow the Annual Meeting Live-blog - a proxy would still be necessary for voting purposes.

The proxy form must be completed, signed, and returned to Theatre Ontario by May 24 at 5pm (to ensure delivery to the meeting), or it can be submitted in-person at the Annual General Meeting.

Keynote Speaker

Autumn_SmithWe're pleased to welcome Autumn Smith as our keynote speaker at our Annual Meeting. Autumn is the Artistic Director and co-founder of MackenzieRo: The Irish Repertory Theatre Company of Canada, and her work reflects involvement in all three sectors of Theatre Ontario's mandate professional, community and educational and in the diversity and connections between the sectors. She is a past intern director in the Neil Munro Intern Directors Project at the Shaw Festival, and has served as an adjudicator for the Association of Community Theatres Central Ontario and the Sears Ontario Drama Festival. As an educator, she has worked with Tarragon Theatre, the Stratford-National Ballet Project, the Stratford Shakespeare Festival of Canada Shakespeare School, Equity Showcase Theatre, and is a featured artist with ART SMARTS, and Stagedoor Manor, an international training centre partnered with The American Theatre Wing. Recent projects include an international workshop of the new Canadian work The Rake's Progress: Do You Know Where Tom Rakewell Is? and directing for the double-bill/co-pro between Obsidian Theatre and MacKenzieRo; upcoming for her will be Bloodless for Theatre 20/Mirvish Productions.

Members of Theatre Ontario who cannot attend in person can follow the live-blog in the members-only section of the website, but a proxy is still required if you wish to participate as a voting member.

Election Of Board Of Directors 2012-2013

The Board of Directors is made up of fifteen individuals.

Five of the fifteen positions on the Board are appointed by the community theatre regions. Incumbents are:

  • Brenda Barr-Worsnop (Cobourg) - Eastern Ontario Drama League representative.
  • Helen Landry (Sudbury) - QUONTA (northeastern Ontario) representative.
  • Cam Lund (Newmarket) - Association of Community Theatres-Central Ontario representative, current Vice-President, and current Chair of the Community Theatre Committee. (stepping down as ACT-CO regional representative to serve as President of the Board.)
  • Mark Mooney (London) - Western Ontario Drama League representative and current Secretary of the Board.
  • (currently vacant) - Northwestern Ontario representative.

Ten of the fifteen positions on the Board are elected to reflect the mandate to ensure regional representation and representation from the professional and educational theatre sectors, as well as any special expertise the Board may require from time to time. Two Board members were elected to two-year terms beginning in 2011 and are returning to the Board in 2012:

  • Deb Sholdice (Clinton) ¬†General Manager, Blyth Festival
  • Ken Stephen (Woodstock) ¬†retired teacher and community theatre practitioner

One Board member elected two a two-year term in 2011 will be stepping down following the AGM. The subsequent vacancy shall be resolved in accordance with the by-laws of Theatre Ontario, and is not an electable position until 2013.

Seven positions shall be elected for the 2012-13 Board of Directors.

The current President, Julianne Snepsts (Picton), will serve a one-year ex-officio term as Past-President.

We have received six nominations for election to the Board. Nominations are now closed and are not permitted from the floor at the AGM. The nominees are:

As per the by-laws of Theatre Ontario, a vote to approve the slate of candidates shall be held at the Annual General Meeting. The remaining one vacancy shall be resolved in accordance with the by-laws.
